The great development of 14th-century Venetian painting began with Giotto’s arrival in Padua in 1302: from the day he arrived, for a century, the city became the scene of a veritable cultural revolution.

The documentary recounts the great development of 14th-century Venetian painting, which began with Giotto’s arrival in Padua. At a time when Italy was dominated by the great Signorie and Maritime Republics, artists were called upon by the powerful to decorate palaces and churches as a testament to their influence. Giotto arrived in Padua around 1302, invited by the Friars Minor of the Basilica of St. Anthony on the recommendation of their brothers in Assisi. The Carraresi family, at that time in conflict with the Most Serene Republic of Venice, embarked on a policy of cultural patronage. More than other important lordships of the 14th century, they moved in cosmopolitan circles, forging relationships with the main European courts. They employed the leading artists of the 14th century for self-celebratory purposes and modelled the city in their own image, giving rise to the Urbs Picta.
