Are you proud? tells the origin and history of Pride in Britain, the country that more than any other has experienced the contradiction between the freedom to express one’s sexuality and homophobic laws only recently eliminated.
Are You Proud? is a powerful and moving journey through fifty years of LGBTQ+ struggles in the United Kingdom, the country that more than any other embodies the contradiction between institutional repression and individual freedom. The documentary weaves together archival materials, never-before-seen testimony and symbolic moments-from the Gay Liberation Front to anti-Clause 28 protests to contemporary Pride-rendering a complex, political and emotional fresco. Directed by Ashley Joiner, Are You Proud? gives voice to veterans, activists, familiar faces and often forgotten minorities – from trans people to Black Pride – to tell not just the story of a movement, but the story of civil rights itself. A necessary film that shows how each achievement brings with it new challenges, and how the struggle for equality is still a collective mission today.
